On March 29, 2011, I announced the launch of my new canvases suitable for people who are looking to receive fine-art-prints at a very affordable prices. If you happened to miss that post, I will quickly bring you up to date. We work and purchase our materials from a highly recognized media company that specializes in award winning inkjet canvases, fine art paper, photo paper, and varnishes. The canvas that we use is a super-heavy-duty 20.5mil, Optical-Brightener-Additive (OBA) Free, highly water resistant, and bright white consistent poly-cotton blend canvas. It also boasts a 15% measureable improvement in dmax and color gamut compared to any other canvas available on the market today. Our canvas, unlike some canvas printing companies is archival certified through the Fine Art Trade Guild. Each of our printed canvases are sealed with a proprietary true matte varnish that provides the industry best protection against UV, Fungal, Scuffs, Fading, Cracking and Tearing damage. We even go a step further and use a varnish that is also certified by the Fine Art Trade Guild. We print all our canvases using genuine Epson Ultrachrome pigmented archival ink, ensuring that you received nothing but the best quality. Our canvases are true Giclée prints and are never emulsion transferred.

We are currently offering 10x16x1.25 wrapped canvases for $80 shipped. That is about 37% cheaper then most canvas printing labs, that use questionable methods and materials. You read an overview of our materials, so now I will explain our process.

Process:

We work on color calibrated monitors and printers to ensure that all colors are accurate to your images. To do this we provide free color correction prior to printing at your discretion. We can also perform image enhancements such as black and white conversions, sepia conversions, oil-painting effects and water color effects. We also provide basic retouching services including exposure correction, color correction, red eye removal, date stamp removal, and removal of minor dust, scratches and blemishes absolutely free at your discretion.

After preparing your image we send it to one of our Epson printers. Your images are printed at 1440dpi at low speed to ensure maximum detail, color graduation, and contrast. We then place your image in a secure location and allow it to air dry for a period of 24-hours to allow the ink to outgas. Once your canvas has completely dried, we seal it with a true matte varnish. After the varnish as dried we place it on the stretching bars, trim it and wrap the canvas. After everything is completed and inspected your canvas is packaged and shipped to you. During the entire process, your image(s) are handled by a human and are never done automatically.

For more information and details please see our other posts regarding prints and canvases at http://blog.charlesshowalter.com/2011/03/31/printing-information/ and http://blog.charlesshowalter.com/2011/03/29/out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new/.

After all of these months, I have not posted any images of our canvases. So today, I decided that I would go ahead and provide a real sample:

I spent the past 3-nights up in Julian, CA with Family for a quick getaway. We spent our entire time up there just relaxing, talking, listening to music and enjoying the outdoors. We did happen to find a fantastic pizza & sandwich place called Hereos Deli. Their 12” Pepperoni pizza is fab and their BBQ Shredded Chicken Sandwich is as equally good. Between Miner’s Dinner, Fajita Grill and Hero’s Deli, Hero’s Deli is by far the best.

I have been to Julian several times and it wasn’t until this last trip that I realized that Julian still has a standing holding cell for suspicious people back in the day. It’s a small building and only holds two people, one in each cell. It was very interesting to check out. It was cool to be able to enter the building and walk around. I did want to enter a cell, but they keep them locked for security purposes. I was tempted to head back to our cabin and get the keys that looked like they would fit the cell doors and try them out. Julian’s Holding Cell:

One of the nights, I did go out in the freezing wind to take some sunset shots. I did pick the perfect night as there was some amazing colors in the sky that I could not pass up. The following image was the last image that I shot that night and it so happened that I went out just in time to capture an amazing array of colors in the sky. The colors you see in this image is what my camera captured. Truly stunning!

This next image is the same image as above, but I took it a step further and turned it into an artistic piece. This image is quite popular on my facebook page, but I am having a hard time duplicating the results in the full size image. I will play with the full size image of these and see if I can match the results as this would make for a great canvas print.

While up there I decided to practice some natural light portraiture photography. This is one area that I am greatly trying to improve in. I have shot most of my portraiture work in studio or using studio strobes, so natural light portraiture photography is a new area for me. I have concluded that I need to learn how to see light and how it relates, because it is different for landscape and wildlife photography.

Lastly just random images. I will eventually add more to this section as I edit more.

It has been approximately 6-months since that last time I have done portraiture photography. This past weekend, my cousin convinced me to finally do another session in a dress that we had bought her a few months back. I’ve been wanting to shoot at Glen Arbor Park for a while now, so I decided we will give it a try. Glen Arbor is a awesome place to photograph at, but in our case it turned out to be the wrong location. For the type of dress that she was wearing, we have determined that a more urban style location would have worked a 1000% better. Lesson Learned. Our next session will be more planned out, as this one was a last moment idea. My Aunt and I are already looking at several different locations to do feature sessions at. She assisted, during this session.

Currently Listening to: Words I Couldn’t Say by Leighton Meester (Country Strong Soundtrack)

Yesterday I received Nik Software’s Complete Collection, and I have to say they have done a tremendous job putting this together. It my first time ever using their software and it was a breeze. What I like about their software is the control points (U-Points) which allows you to selectively change the effects in particular parts of the image.I played around with the collection for several hours and I feel like I am just starting to get a grasp on its full potential it can offer. Although I am struggling with is HDR Efex Pro. I am very accustom to the results that Photomatix puts out, that I am having a hard time matching it in HDR Efex Pro, which I will demonstrate in this post.

The follow images demonstrate some of the effects that you will find in Color Efex Pro. My favorites thus far are Glamour Glow, B/W Conversion and Vignette Blur. Color Stylizer also produces a nice effect, which you can see in the middle image directly below. These effects are just the tip of the iceberg and I am sure I will use more as time goes on.

HDR Efex Pro vs Photomatix: I have been using Photomatix for years and I very accustom to their controls and how the results will turn out. I was pleased with the results and my clients absolutely loved the results. Then I know several people who swear by HDR Efex Pro so I decided to give it a try. HDR Efex has so many algorithms to choose from, it can be almost daunting to get started. I did try some of their presets, but they were not giving me starting results to manipulate from. Basically it was a lot of trial and error. After a couple hours of trying all kinds of different results I think I finally found something that almost has the same look as Photomatix. After spending considerable amount of time in HDR Efex Pro, I don’t think that I will give it up. I know its potential and I wish to gain more knowledge in its controls to produce amazing HDR images. Without further ado, lets get on with the comparison.

Many people have asked what is the best choice for shooting macros without hitting their bank accounts for a new dedicated lens. There are several choices that a person can pick from. You can either rent a dedicated macro lens, purchase extension tubes, or purchase macro filters that screw onto an existing lens. If you are shooting commercially, being paid, then it is in your best interest as a photographer and to your company to rent a dedicated macro lens.

What spark the interest in writing this post is the current discussion going on in the photography group that I am part of. We are discussing the various alternatives to dedicated macro lenses. In this post, we will be looking at one of those alternatives, in particularly the Tiffen Close-up Filter set which can be found at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/56779-REG/Tiffen_52CUS_52mm_Close_up_Glass_Lens.html for $32.96 + Shipping.

For less than $40 these filters actually perform very well, and you can use them for less critical detailed shots. Also they are stackable to make a total of +7 magnification. At +7 it begins to loose sharpness and detail using wide apertures as you will see in the 100% crop shown below. At this point I would recommend stepping down 2-stop to increase depth of field. I have used this filters in the past to shoot close-ups of products in the studio with exceptional results. My post on the spider holster was shot using my nifty fifty and macro filters. You can find that post here: http://blog.charlesshowalter.com/2010/10/27/spiderpro-system/. Getting detailed shots is possible and it essentially comes down to what Zack Arias says, “Know your camera, know your gear, know your limitations.” For me, I know that my nifty fifty can’t use +7 at f/2.8, therefore I wouldn’t use this combination to shoot detailed close-ups.

Equipment: Canon 50 f/1.8 (Nifty Fifty) + Tiffen 52mm Close-up Filter Set +1, +2, +4

Technical: ISO – 200, Shutter Speed – 400, Aperture – 2.8

Processing: None (SOOC)

How many of you attended Zack Arias – Found of a Working Photographer workshop on creative live? During the 3-Day workshop, Zack Arias nailed just about every question that I have been pondering about, especially in-regards to being a Canon shooter. Being a former Nikon shooter then switching over to Canon, there was plenty to be learned. The one area that I struggle with when I made the switch was metering as I was accustomed to the way Nikon metered. Thus my images were inconsistent from shot to shot. Another contributing factor to this is my limited knowledge on natural lighting, since I was taught mostly with artificial lighting. After spending the 3-day tuning into the workshop, had all my questions answered, it was time to put what I had learned to work. So I grab my dog and used her as a model to try out the new things that I have learned.

Here was the test that I performed using the metering method that Zack uses. These are SOOC.

And it works. Now I can feel more confident in my exposure and having consistency throughout my shots.

Today my family and I went to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to catch the end of the butterfly exhibit. The butterfly exhibit comes around once a year and although its fun to watch all the butterflies fly around and look their amazing colors, it can be pressing when it comes to photos. It is always packed which makes maneuvering around difficult and it causes some people to become impatient. Like today, I saw a shoot and started to move in and some lady came in stood right in my way and she knew it; she also knew that I wasn’t particularly happy about it either, but what are you going to do. I did manage to come home with some butterfly images and I am considering going sometime mid-next week when it isn’t so crowded. I would like to spend more time photographing the butterflies and not feel like I am being rushed. I did manage to capture one of my Grandma’s favorite animals, the Gorilla and I was able to get some shots of one of my favorite animals, the Meerkat. I also got to photograph a youth male cheetah without much of a crowd. All-in-all today turn out great.

This morning I decided that I would take a trip back to Orange Empire Railway Museum because they have a train there that I really wanted to photograph. That train in particular is a steam powered train from Union Pacific number 2564. I did find the train and I was not expecting what I saw. This steam powered train is huge, and it would be amazing if OERM members will have the opportunity to restore in back to operation. It is currently being reserved for restoration, but OERM will need to build another building and purchase additional equipment to restore it. Here are some shots from our quick 30 minute trip this morning:

My cousin bought a new car. To be exact he bought a Chevy Camaro and he wanted to get some shots of it so that he can have a before and after shot. These are the before shots and in the next few days the dealer will be installing his rims, which I am sure will be doing some more shots. I never shot vehicles before so this was a new learning experience. If you’re asking did I get to drive it and the answer is Yes! Black Chevy Camaro – Before Rims:

Today my Dad and I went to the Orange Empire Railway Museum to check it out. OERM is a free to enter museum and is ran by volunteers, however it does cost $12 for an all day train ride pass or you can sign up for any of their membership options. We spent approximately a hour to a hour and half walking around the grounds and looking at the various trains, trolleys, and cars. We didn’t get to see everything, but we did get to about half of the grounds. We would have liked to continue, but it was extremely hot in the train yard and neither one of us had something to drink. I was hauling my gear with me, so I decided it was time to go.

The museum grounds are opened everyday from 9-5pm, but to get the full experience you must visit on the weekends. This is when the trains are operating and the hangers are open. To my surprise for being a free museum, it was not crowded at all. Most of the people there were families with small children and they were just riding the train and yellow-car back and forth and playing in the kids area. I am a very observant person, so while walking around I was trying to get a feel for some of the volunteers and how the react between each other, and there are some questionable ones.

Heading back to our vehicle at the train station two of the volunteers started to get into it. One was mouthing off and the other was yelling back I told you to take break, and it started to get heated. If there wasn’t children around, I am sure some words would have started to pop off since he was already trying so deeply hard not to. He eventually hopped into the Santa Fe train and went on the tour. I know that these people are volunteering their time, but at the same time children and families are around, so it should have waited until a more appropriate time or a place in private.

Would I visit the museum again?

Absolutely and despite the volunteers mishap, the museum is a great place for kids to view a bit of history, ride trains, and is a nice place to have a family picnic. The museum does have special events throughout the year and one of their most popular events is when Thomas the Train is running. Their next event is an Antique Truck show and that is happening on May 1st. Since this is an event, an admission price of $7 is required, or included with a purchase of an all day train and trolley pass for $12.

It was less than a year ago that I started learning and semi-shooting portraiture photography. It was quite the learning experience. I started off with a simple muslin background and cheap studio strobes, and umbrella. It was going great and the images were coming out well shooting family members. I then decided that, hey I would do some free portraits for friends of the family. I did one free session, and ended that offer. I had everything setup and ready to go, then made the mistake of using a kit lens instead of my 50mm. That was the deal breaker. I contemplated which lens to use and made the wrong choice. Yes, we even make mistakes. Given that this session was probably my fifth ever portrait session that I have done, I also did not know much about editing for portraits as I mainly shot landscape and wildlife. I spent a couple hours editing the images and gave each of the models 10 images each to the best of my abilities at that time, per the TFCD Contract, which they didn’t read. The models were not satisfied of the results of their free session and Instead of coming directly to me to discuss possible options, it was posted on one of their social network pages, which I was ultimately given the link to view that private album and read the comments. During this period of time I was also transitioning from a Nikon Entry Level Camera to an Industry Recognized Canon Camera. From that day forward everything has changed.

Last Year (After this session):

1.) I sold my kit lens and bought (2) new lenses. 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM and 28-75mm f/2.8 to occupy my 50mm f/1.8.

2.) Purchased a tried and true studio strobe, and battery pack from Paul C Buff.

3.) Received a large umbrella, 60” Convertible.

4.) Received a large softbox made by Paul C Buff.

5.) Purchased Large Capacity, UDMA CF Cards (Lexar) and Lexar Memory Card Reader

6.) Spent extensive time learning about portraiture retouching.

7.) Spent a few days learning from professional photographers.

8.) Calibrated my monitors using industry standard calibration devices.

Last/This Month:

1.) Reevaluated my old TFCD contract and made considerable changes to it for a near future launch of a “Free Portrait” promotion. – Which is now online so that it can be viewed anytime by participants to know what they will be receiving and what they can do with the images.

2.) Launched a full line printing service: Learn more at: http://blog.charlesshowalter.com/2011/03/31/printing-information/ and http://blog.charlesshowalter.com/2011/03/29/out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new/

3) Spent more time learning about portraiture retouching.

4.) Reevaluated my portfolio, changes are going to be made.

5.) Continued discussions with professional photographers.

6.) Reevaluated that session using all the materials, techniques and software that I have learned since. What do you think?

This isn’t the end for my learning. I will always continue to learn, improve and build in my photography and printing services. I take extreme pride in both, and if coupled together, the results are nothing but outstanding. I have sold dozens of prints and several canvases and received nothing, but exceptional feedback.

What I hope that people get out of this blog post are that: Even though we don’t like to admit it mistakes do and can happen, if there are issues contact your photographer, there are other options than dissing people on social network sites, make sure to always thoroughly read a contract, I value all feedback so that I can improve, I am honest, and I take my work very seriously.

All our prices are based upon the quality of materials that we use. Most in-store and consumer online labs use materials that are designed to last for 3-5 years unprotected and between 10-15 years protected in glass or a album. Our standard prints are designed to withstand >50-years unprotected. We also understand that printing is more than just the type of papers that are used. That is why we will never try to sell to you, using gimmicks such as "we print on high-quality specialty papers designed to bring out the best in your photos," as we know there is a lot more to printing to yield professional, long lasting results than just paper. This is where we set ourselves apart from consumer labs.

Inks:
We print all images using UltraChrome Archival Pigmented Inks.

Glossy Prints:
We print all glossy photographs using professional quality, long lasting, heavy-weight, ultra-smooth, bright white, smudge and water resistant Epson papers. I then coat your images with a Glossy finish to provide additional protection against UV, fading, smudging and water damage. Our glossy prints will last at least >50-years unprotected/unframed

Luster Prints:
We print all Luster photographs using either Kodak Professional Resin Coated or Epson Professional Resin Coated papers. These paper are heavy-weight 10mil and provide the highest possible color gamut available for vivid color reproduction. I also coat luster prints with a Glossy finish to provide additional protection against UV, fading, smudging and water damage.
Our luster prints will last at least >50-years unprotected/unframed

Museum Prints:

Our Museum Prints are top of the line. We print each image on 100% Cotton Rag Fine Art Papers with the highest possible color gamut and DMAX available today. Our Fine Art Papers are also certified by the Fine Art Trade Guild for Achievability. We then coat each print with a proprietary museum grade matte varnish also certified by the Fine Art Trade Guild. This coat provides each print with the industry best protection against UV damage, fungal damage, scuffs, fading, cracking, and tearing. These prints are designed to last.

All of our Museum Prints are printed on 13×19 Sheets. An example of what a 13×19 Sheet can hold:

(1) 13×19 Print
(9) 4×6 Prints
(4) 5×7 and (9) Standard Wallets
(1) 8×10 and (2) 5×7 and (4) Standard Wallets

Canvases:
Both our small and large canvases are archival certified. Our small canvases will last at least >75-years and our large canvases will last at least >100-years. See our blog post at: http://blog.charlesshowalter.com/2011/03/29/out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new/

We do not guarantee these print life estimates because they are simply scientific estimates. Many variables like sun exposure, humidity, pollution, and the like will be at play differently in each users home, work, or gallery. We cannot take them all into account and still offer these print life tests.

If you know me, then you know that I am all about quality. So today I am pleased to announce that we will be dropping our old 10×16 Canvases from Hahnemuhle and will be using professional archival materials. First and foremost all canvases will be printed using genuine Epson UltraChrome Archival Pigmented Inks. We print at 1440 dpi on super-heavy-duty 20.5mil, ultra DMAX, OBA-Free, high water resistant, bright white consistent poly-cotton blend archival canvas certified by the Fine Art Trade Guild. We then seal your canvas with a proprietary matte finish archival top-coat that provides the industry best protection against UV damage, fungal damage, scuffs, fading, cracking, and tearing.

Wait! I never seen or heard of you selling canvases?

We just started selling canvases a few months ago and they are currently limited to family, friends and upon special request. We currently offer two finished sizes: 6×8 using the materials by Hahnemuhle and 10×16 which will be using the materials outlined in this post. All future 6×8 Hahnemuhle canvases will be printed on Archival Monet, OBA-Free Canvas.

How long will my canvas last?

I have performed a tremendous amount of research looking for the best available materials that are certified to archival standards. On top of this we adhere to the rigorous production standards for genuine Giclée canvas prints. Along with using the highest quality inkjet canvas and archival inks, we seal every canvas with a protective top-coat to ensure color preservation and protection against humidity and other environmental hazards. Because of our high standards and product quality, our canvases should last for at least 150 years.

How should I care for my canvas?

Our canvases are extremely durable and do not require special care. While we recommend displaying our canvas prints in a dry, temperature controlled location, they are specifically designed to withstand many of the environmental factors that may damage other artwork, such as exposure to sunlight or humidity. If necessary, gently clean with a feather duster or a damp or dry soft cloth.

Do you offer unstretched canvases?

Yes, we offer unstretched canvases and the reason why we do this is that some customers have the tools and expertise to stretched their own canvases. In addition, some customers wish to mat and frame unstretched canvases under glass or hang them between rails. Others also like to embellish them with embroidery, paint, or other adornments. Two options are available: 1.) Mirror Edges, or Full Image 2.) Black Edges or White Edges

Are you going to raise your already set price?

Absolutely not. We purchased the materials in bulk in-order to maintain our competitive pricing.

Today I decided to try out a new modifier, a 60” convertible umbrella and it is amazing. Now, I wonder why did it take me so long to get one. I always wanted to take a photograph that had rich skies and amazing cloud structures so today ended up being a double whammy for me. I tried to get my cousin to come out and take some photographs, but she refused at first. So I called out my dog and she was such a good sport and posed for me. She was rewarded afterwards with a yummy treat.

I am ready for my close-up!

Ooh, the neighbors dog is barking!

After getting my mess all cleaned up, my cousin decided that she wanted to pose for some photographs. I took all my gear back outside and we decided to try some new things. Although none of us was prepared for a photo session, I think we were able to capture some good results. Posing is not my strongest area so we decided to do some basic poses as well as some random shots.

Who needs shoes, it’s Spring….

Tonya’s thinking…. &…. She Decided she will go hug our tree!

Lets work with that a little bit…Perspective!

Tonya’s favorite thing is to Jam out to music as our final shoot. Since my battery was dying, I put on Airplanes by B.o.B and she started to Jam out. This shot had a sensible feeling to it.

Tonight was the night for the supermoon which last took place over 18-years ago. Tonight the moon will appear to be 14% larger and 30% brighter than it normally would. There wasn’t a better time to head outside and take some photographs. Since it was beginning to cool off quite quickly outside, the first thing I did was get a fire going. Tip: Spring & Summer are the perfect firepit seasons.

After getting a fire roaring, it was time to take some images. I took several images as the moon moved throughout the night sky looking at various lighting and foreground subjects. The first image that I took was just the moon itself.

The second image, I took of the moon was it passing through some of the branches in our tree.

The last image that I took was of the neighbor’s tree. Although it doesn’t contain the moon, I thought it would still compliment this short blog post.

Early Saturday morning my Dad and I left for Morro Bay for his vacation and birthday. I believe he had a great time, but I think he would have enjoyed it more if he didn’t currently have a back injury. We did do a considerable amount of activities while we were there and he pushed through a lot of the pain. During our trip we visited Morro Rock, Elephant Seals, Ragged Point, Hearst Castle, Natural History Museum, Hiked Montaña de Oro to the tide pools, hike in Monterey County and even walked Embarcadero.

I’ve been to Morro Bay several times now and they have this post card labeled “Morro Bay at Night” and it just printed completely black. I decided to do my own version of this called “Embarcadero at Night.” This image was taken off of the balcony in our room, and the black and white makes this image sale.

The first night, I completely missed the sunset. I walked across the street a half-hour before sunset to watch the lighting and wait for the tones that I wanted. For the duration before and after sunset I continued to shoot the scene, but the lighting wasn’t what I wanted. It was being obstructed by the heavy clouds that day. Not to mention that the winds were strong and it made for a very cold night. The second night, I did happen to score some sunset images. I spent a lot of time during this trip photographing at sunset and at night, because it is an area that I want to improve in.

Have you ever tried to photograph wild birds at night? It’s difficult, but I got lucky and I found a seagull resting on a dock post with amazing light behind him. I walked right on him and setup my tripod, dialed in some settings, composed and took the shot. While taking this and several other shots, the people in the restaurant were watching my every move. I can hear their thoughts, “please don’t turn around and take our picture. Please oh please don’t.”

“Sally sells seashells by the seashore.” My dad pushed through a considerable amount of pain to make it down to the tide pools at Montaña de Oro State Park to hold some starfish. Unfortunately there wasn’t any. I looked through every tide pool in hopes to find one so that the trip wasn’t a complete waste. I didn’t find anything except for hundreds of hermit crabs and some sea urchins. We did find some shells though. I have no idea what type of marine life these shells are from.

When we started hiking Montaña de Oro is was crystal clear outside, but it quickly turned when we started to head back to our car. The fog outside became so thick that we couldn’t no longer see the car, nor could you see the water from the edge of the cliff. It was amazing how quickly it rolled in. It did make for some interesting images later that evening.

That fog eventually worked its way into Morro Bay which is stayed through the entire night. The fog did allow me to capture some illusion photography as well as make some pretty awesome backdrops for some images. The first image is one of Morro Rock which represents an illusion. The first reaction that I got and that others got from the image is that it looks like I was on a plane or a helicopter passing by Morro Rock. In fact, it was taken off of the balcony in our room using a 70-200mm zoom lens.

This next image is of the harbor and bay. I don’t know why I like this image, but I do. Our hotel is hidden among the fog

One of my favorite images. While we were walking Embarcadero I wanted to go down to some of the docks. We came to the USCG and I wanted to check out some of their boats. Also at this dock is where the fishermen pick up their bait and the next thing we notice is that a harbor seal is yelling up a storm. Interested we decided to hang around a while and wait for him to come out. While waiting, one of the fisherman was done loading bait and started to head out into the bay. Intrigued by the lighting in the water I was thinking, I hope he comes this way. It started to head the way I wanted him to go and I found an opening on the dock. I composed my shot and I waited for the right moment then bam! I took the image and got what I wanted. Come to find out, the opening I was taking the images from was his docking spot. It was cool watching his vessel head directly towards me.

With all the fog lingering around it still didn’t stop me from taking a sunset shot. During sunset the fog looked like a huge wave, as tall as Morro Rock, heading directly towards Morro Bay. It was very interesting and the light was so amazing that I could not pass up the opportunity.

Last but not least, we have our friends. We went though three bags of peanuts feeding the squirrels. They are very gentle in taking food from you and some of them will even sit on your lap and eat. Make sure to always thoroughly wash your hands before touching your mouth, eyes and eating after feeding any form of wild animals. Remember wild animals carry diseases.

I know of many photographers that will never see a project again after they have completed it. I am different. Several times throughout the year I will revisit all the images that I have taken since I started photography. I like to see how far I have come since I started photography as well as see how my style and decision makings have changed over time. When I started photography, I had no idea which images I should keep for further processing and which I should completely disregard, so I would only keep whatever image was easier to process due to my lack of processing skills. Today things are different, so I revisit past projects and I am always finding another image to process or reprocess using the new techniques that I have learned over time. Today was one of those days and I have some new images to share with you.

I took one of my most selling images and gave it an entirely new feel and meaning, and from the feedback it’s a sure winner.

The next set of images are newly processed, never before seen images from me. These images were taken back in May, 2010 at Nikki Evans Mock Wedding Workshop.

Well not exactly, but I will be early Saturday morning. I have blogged about Morro Bay before in previous posts, but I really never explained to much about it. As you can guess Morro Bay is a bay, no kidding right?! Morro Bay is located on the 1-Fwy which is a known freeway for its spectacular views of oceans, rocks and mountains. Morro Bay is located in between San Luis Obispo and Hearst Castle. Morro Bay offers plenty of things to do for the entire family. In Morro Bay itself you can find pretty much everything to do on Embarcadero. On Embarcadero you will find fishing, kayaking, canoeing, whale watching tours, harbor tours, otter sightings, golfing, beaches, shopping, playgrounds, museums, art exhibits, and hiking if you are feeling adventurous.

There are other activities that are within an hour driving distance that from the heart of Morro Bay. Museum of Natural History is only a couples minutes off of Embarcadero located through the golf course. You will also find that the Estuary isn’t far from the golf course as well as Montana De Oro State Park. Montana De Oro State Park has a beach, picnic tables, hiking, site seeing and tide pools were you can pick up starfish (Please educate everyone in your party about proper handling). Heading North back on the 1-Fwy you will find a small town called “Cambria.” I highly recommend everyone to stop there and eat at the Main Street Grill if you love smoked food; but make sure to bring cash because its all they except. Then continuing up north you will run into Hearst Castle which offers some amazing tours and make you wish you had an indoor pool like they do. Still continuing north you will run into an elephant seal reserve and during breeding season you can see thousands and thousands of them (I do have an image in an earlier post). Last, but not least on the north 1-Fwy you will run into Ragged Point Inn. Ragged Point Inn has some spectacular views, walking path and does have hiking. The hiking at Ragged Point Inn is at your own risk and I would rate the trail as high.

My dad came home from work today (Tuesday) and told me he isn’t visiting my blog because I haven’t posted in a while; and he is right, I haven’t been posting. It has been almost two weeks since my last blog post, so what have I been doing this whole. The week before last I was extremely busy working on a class assignment. I was spending a lot of time working on my résumé, cover letter and follow up thank you letter which were three of four major point projects.

This past week I started extensive programming again. I told myself about two year ago to never take on a project that would require more than one day of programming per month and it held true up until now. I started building a personal online printing service web site, which requires me to write thousands of lines of code. So I have been spending more then 12-hours a day doing nothing but straight coding, debugging, testing security, and designing. My intentions for this site is to allow family and select friends the ability to register, upload photos, and have them printed with professional results.

I do enjoy programming because I had a very positive start with lots of support from friends. They were always pushing me to become better, complimented me on my effort, as well as provide input on new features or designs. On the other hand, I do love photography and passionately want to improve in it, but it has been a rocky start for me with shattered hopes, let downs, and a bad experience. Despite all of this, programming isn’t the cream of the crop for me either. In fact I probably shouldn’t be programming, since it starts to mess with me emotionally. I literally become a zombie. I don’t want anyone to disturb me, I don’t want anyone to ask me do anything, and I turn down just about everything. I don’t not realize that I am in a zombie state until someone mentions it. Like today I was asked “How come you don’t want to do anything?”, followed by “Because you have been at that again.”, referring to programming. I am a completely different person when programming.

Fortunately, I am going to take some time away from programming and take care of things that I need to do. I have the next three days to wrap up any last discussions, take my course final and leave a note for future students. During this time I also have to get my gear packed, clothes packed, print reservations, update gps, and get my next college course supplies ready; because it starts the third day of my vacation. Hooray, for online classes.

To Zenfolio Users: Today I also did a complete rewrite from the ground up on my client login script. (See Zenfolio Forums)

I don’t want this post to go imageless, so I am providing some screenshots of the site I am developing:

This past Wednesday my Cousin took me to a location in Murrieta to scout for photoshoots and for general hiking. The location has some ideal spots for sessions, but a lot of the places are not easy to get to and would be especially hard to get gear around. Most of the images I took were on the other side of the creek, which meant crossing over small rocks above a flowing creek. I would be more at ease crossing a creek with gear if I had a waterproof pelican case or find an easier path and way to cross the creek without having to go through it. Despite some limiting factors I will most likely do a photo session here in the near future. The entrance that leads down to the creek would be an ideal place for photos as well as some of the trails that lead down to the creek.

Have you every had one of those days that you think nature is after you? Well, yesterday was one of those days for me. My goal for yesterday was to get out and capture some Fine Art work. I waited until there was a break in the rain, grabbed my gear and headed out. Not a moment soon after reaching the curb it started to rain and progressed rather quickly. I retreated back into the house and it stopped raining, my luck right! Since it was lunch time and I was hungry I took a few minutes to make some lunch, and sat down to one of my favorite movies. During this time it had not rained and the cement was beginning to dry. I figured the rained had stopped at this point and I headed back out, and you would not believe what happened next. It started raining once again. Frustrated at this point I decided to call it a day, so I thought. Since I wasn’t able to do what I wanted, I figured it was time for my Parakeet to get his pictures taken. Normally Trinity doesn’t like to get his picture taken and runs away, but this time he was all for it. Matter of fact, he was showing off to the camera and to himself. I was able to get a couple of shots from him, but still disappointed in the outcome. During this time my dog was watching, so I also took an image of her as well.

My Spoiled Brats: (Trinity Left, Cinnamon Right)

Early that morning I received a text message from my cousin asking if I would do a mini-session of her child in his raingear. I gave her some information regarding a time that would be best considering the amount of luck that I was having. When she got off of work she stopped by and we started discussing it. I figured since Aiden was already over, had all his raingear with him and the skies were looking amazing I decided lets go ahead and give it a shot. I mistakenly said “I haven’t had any luck today, every time I went outside with my gear it started to rain,” that wasn’t very smart. I hauled all my gear outside, got it setup and it started raining. Aiden was playing behind the shed, having a blast and didn’t want to come out. After a few minutes I got him to come out and stand where I wanted him. I took an exposure shot, readjusted my flash and before I got to compose the shot he started to take off, so I took a blind-fire shot and he said I’m done. Like a true celebrity. I didn’t get a chance to review the image, as I wanted to get all my gear inside and out of the rain. After I got my gear all cleaned up, I finally got a chance to review the image and I nailed it. Exposure was perfect and sharp. The composition wasn’t what I wanted, but who’s going to argue. I got the shot, which counts.
